TORONTO NOTARY SERVICE now offers Apostille, Authentication and Legalization services in the City of Toronto.

Oftentimes, using Canadian documents overseas for educational, business or legal purposes requires them to be (1) notarized and then (2) verified by the appropriate Canadian government authority before they are recognized in other counties. Although we can notarize the documents in-house, the verification process must be completed using one of the following two options:

  1. Authentication and Legalization

Canadian documents intended for use in a non-Hague Apostille country, whether for business, educational or personal purposes, must undergo Authentication and Legalization to ensure their legal validity for use in that country. “Authentication and legalization” is a process whereby a document is first authenticated by the Canadian government authority, and then legalized by the consulate or embassy of the country where it is to be used.

  1. Apostille

An Apostille is a certification attached to a notarized document verifying its authenticity for use in foreign countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.

On January 11, 2024, Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention which simplified international recognition of documents across borders for the benefit of businesses, individuals and organizations.

For documents notarized by an Ontario Notary, the Apostille Certificate is issued by the Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery through its Official Documents Services (ODS) office.

  1. Apostille, Legalization and Authentication service steps:

STEP 1: Notarization – Notarize your documents with an Ontario Public Notary. You can mail your documents to us, attend at our office or use our mobile notary service to complete this step.

STEP 2: Obtain the Apostille Certificate – The Apostille Certificate is obtained at the Official Documents Services (ODS) office located in downtown Toronto. You can either attend in person or we can do so on your behalf. We can obtain your certificate in 1 – 3 business days. Should you require, we can mail the documents to you by registered mail.

Our Apostille, Legalization and Authentication service fees are $175 for the first document and $35 for each subsequent document. Notarization fees, if necessary, are separate.

STEP 3 Consular Attendance (for non-Apostille countries only) – Attendance as the consular office of the document’s intended country of use is required for their stamps to be applied to the document.

Our consular attendance fee is $100 plus any fees applied by the consular office for their service.
